Maintaining a safe, clean and friendly estate
Our village is located in an area where there was bush and no urban infrastructure before. Maintaining our houses well and building a lasting infrastructure which is easy to maintain is no easy challenge.
When we began, we had to devise all of our logistical challenges ourselves - not only to deliver food, water and power to our families but also to deal with our own waste in a sustainable fashion. With several hundred people passing through our village every year and little help in terms of public infrastructure, this is no easy challenge.
Luckily, everyone in our village shares a sense of personal responsibility for our houses and also our communal areas. With the help of everybody at Kids of Africa and with the guidance of our estate manager, Timothy, as well as our village director, Tage, the village has become a showcase for sustainable infrastructure development in Uganda. Our top-priority is to maintain it in a clean, safe and child-friendly way. But we also emphasize rigorous cost-control and working preferably with local labour in order to set an example which others can follow.
