United to make a difference
Kids of Africa is a very personal story. About ten years ago, Burkhard Varnholt received an unsolicited letter from a person he had not known from Uganda asking for financial assistance. After sending a donation, another very personal letter created a sense of curiosity. Burkhard Varnholt travelled to Uganda to meet the family he had supported and a lasting friendship resulted. When the young adults struggled to find jobs after completing their education, Burkhard proposed to establish a village for children – which they could build in order to acquire professional experience.
The actual village sprung up in no time at all near lake Victoria in an area that was covered with bush and had neither water nor power before. Now the village is home to ten large families and is supported by a growing number of friends and supporters from many different backgrounds.
Kids of Africa is today a Swiss-registered and a Uganda-registered charity. When we claim to be a family, we also refer to our organisation in Switzerland. Our Swiss board consists of several committed individuals who have chosen to make a lasting difference to this special organization. Our board members come from different professional backgrounds, such as medicine, architecture, banking, and others. We are also often helped by many dear friends, by volunteers and by anonymous donors to whom we owe sincere gratitude.
